The author is a skin cancer survivor.  As a kid I used to come home from Rockaway Beach L.I.  red as a lobster, then thousands of hours in my farm fields/orchards, just a little south of Albany N.Y. exposed to the sun,  active in outside sports all of my life,  and no question this brought this problem to the table for me.  I happen to think that diet and especially refined sugar also plays a role in the propensity for skin cancer,  any cancer for that matter.  Sugar creates an acid environment in the body (refined grains, booze and too much fatty meats as well, especially when cooked at high temperatures) and cancer cells thrive in an acid environment.  It is known that cancer cells hate an alkaline environment.  Check out our Alkalinity features http://www.blueeyedcurse.com/alkalize.htm

On the same token we are not putting ourselves between your skin problems and the trained eye of an  honest Physician.  We do  intend to continue to take advantage of the professional relationships we have in the dermatology field, with regular check ups,  as self healing can be deadly, especially if you are not trained to identify the deadly melanoma that can take over your body.  Below is a picture that could help you identify the signs of melanoma.  This is one puppy you don't want to fool with.

Aloe Vera

Although it has been known for centuries including primitive illustrations carved into  rock that Aloe Vera has many benefits, cuts, burns, digestion, etc.,  but this book focuses on the use of Aloe Vera for a protective, nourishing skin cream.

It is written that scientists have discovered that the same antioxidants that suppress free radicals when ingested, also protects the skin when topically applied.  There are companies that have developed skin creams with not only antioxidants in them,  but have incorporated full spectrum protection against the damaging effects of too much sun.

Keep in mind that the skin functions as an organ that can absorb and excrete both nutrients and toxins through its pores.  I have a personal theory that nutrients absorbed by the skin and circulated back to the organs can have as much of a profound effect on your health as ingested nutrients through the digestive system.  I would bet my life that nutrients applied on the skin derived from the biological properties of Aloe Vera,  plus the anti-oxidants in our aloe plus formula,  work hand in hand with the Vitamin D3 process and clean Cholesterol production.  As we have noted clean cholesterol is needed in every cell of the body and in particular the brain,  as 20% of the brain consists of cholesterol.  Willie Sutton the notorious bank robber was asked why he robbed banks and he said "Because this is where the money is at"  When a cat catches a mouse, they eat the head first because that is where the cholesterol is.  Yucky!

The condition of your skin is a powerful reflection of just how healthy you are on the inside.  One feature that we will cover below is the extraordinary abilities for our skin cream to breath and this is so important if you believe in the principles above regarding the pores of your skin.  We have not had any luck with petroleum based products, coconut and other oils that seal the skin and you can tell how effective they are by how well they are absorbed and how much discomfort you have in excessive warmth on your skin.  The skin must breath to be healthy.

There are different schools of thought regarding sweating.  There are the sauna advocates that in most cases have something to sell and there are the exercise advocates as it relates to sweating.  We are exercise advocates as exercise involves body movement and body movement excretes acids and wastes from areas that non-movement cannot.

We mention above the relationship of your pores regarding sweating and this is where our AloePlus concept enters the picture.  Applying AloePlus before a exercise session starts the process.  AloePlus not being a petroleum based material is readily absorbed into the skin and penetrates adequately to some degree.  In the process the anti-oxidants  in AloePlus tackles the acids and wastes and  neutralizes them. 

Shortly after the exercise session begins a reverse process is generated with sweat excretion.  Sweat excretion purges the anti-oxidants with the acids and wastes on board and the benefits are huge.  Incidentally we are presently studying the benefits of applying AloePlus to area that have had Lymph node dissection that leaves an area with less lymph nodes that were originally put there by the man upstairs.  With a half a deck of lymph nodes in a critical area as under the arm and breast area it would seem to me that purging acids in these areas would be a smart thing to do.

There is also another complimentary addition to this entire process and this the hydration factor.  We discuss alkalinity at length in most of our features as it is so important in the proper function of the body.  Alkaline foods and  a modest amount of acid food intake will insure the fluids in your body resonating with the sweat process and optimum excretion that does not leave the body starved and depleted of minerals after an exercise session.

Therefore it is important to maintain a good hydration before, during and after an exercise session.  You will read that we are very conscious of not only hydration but the quality of the hydration.

There are sports drinks that we do not participate in as in some cases they are junk.  There may be some sports drinks that are effective but we would rather create our own mixture and this is what we do every morning.  We start every morning with a glass of warm water with a tablespoon of Braggs organic Apple Cider Vinegar.  In addition we add a couple of good squirts of lemon juice. 

We then proceed to make up two thermos bottles with this mix for our daily consumption.  We also add a little paprika with its potassium content to this daily mix as potassium is lost in the sweating process.  The minerals in the vinegar and lemon juice also replace mineral loss.  If you have read some of our other features you will know that we avoid city water with chlorine and fluoride along with the other problems by using distilled water.  Distilled water for the most part is void of minerals and problem chemicals.  You need minerals in water and this is what is accomplished with the additions we add to the water.

 

Now these two ingredients lemon and apple cider vinegar  are two of the finest alkaline foods that you can ingest, yes I said alkaline as most would associate these two miracle foods with being acids because they are acids,  but immediately convert to alkaline as soon as they hit the stomach.  Don't ask me to explain the chemistry of this because it is above my pay grade.

Most of our fluid intake through out the day at our meals in particular consist of this concoction.  We do include fresh orange juice with a couple of glasses each day, actually 2 - 1/2 glasses with water as we are a little careful with the sugar content in orange juice.  With these two key glasses of juice a day we add a big tablespoon of Milk Whey Protein and about 30 to 40 pumpkin petita seeds.  In addition to the carbs of the orange juice, the whey provides the protein and the pumpkin seed provide the fat.  These 3 components make up a terrific 40-30-30 balance of Carbs, Protein and Fat at every meal and snack.

Again as in  lemon all citrus is an alkaline food and alkaline foods is what you need to join your fluids in completing a thorough purging of acids in the sweating process,  as well the other elimination vehicles in your body process.

We mention the benefits of the sun and its cancer prevention capabilities.  We believe that keeping the skin at peak efficiency will enhance the Vitamin D process from the sun.

 

The Blend                           

The basic principals of AloePlus is incorporating fresh Aloe Vera  and an array of powerful known anti-oxidants into a blend with a quality off the shelf skin cream.  Most skin creams that profess to have Aloe Vera and anti-oxidants in them have so little concentration of either  that the only purpose is to claim  it on their labels.  If  skin manufacturers were to put enough of either in their mix to be effective in "Free Radical Absorption" the cost could be prohibitive to the consumer,  especially if you do full body coatings. 

So what we are advocating is prevention, always the best choice.

The following information is a process that we use in preparing an Aloe Vera skin  cream mix.    We use  a good off the shelf topical body cream.  We like the St. Ive's products.  In fact St. Ive's has just come out with a new formula with Collagen and Elastin in it and these are proven skin enhancers in their own right.   We also like St. Ives because it is not petroleum based and breaths.  Using a petroleum  based cream is a mistake in our humble opinion.

There are skin care sources that claim that any petroleum based product will have a negative breathing effect on the skin.  I have not found that to be the case with St. Ives and the Aloe Vera we add could be the answer.  We have used straight St. Ives and without this breathing problem. 

AloePlus  needs the St. Ives just to tighten up the watery Aloe that is added.  There are many other pluses to the addition of a good off the shelf cream, one is the preservation stabilizers in them that will be a benefit to the fresh aloe that you will be adding to the mix,  although we believe the  anti-oxidants we add to our mix are the major contributors to maintaining the integrity of the mix.   We have not experienced any degradation factor.

Again we personally recommend straight Aloe Vera gel eaten out of the garden.  We use the gel from a large leaf just about every day in a dynamite smoothie that we create with our high speed blender.  They claim that the gel only should be used and not to scrape close to the skin.  There are elements close to the skin that can cause allergic reactions.   I do have a habit of using the balance fairly close to the aloe skin on my skin, but again never scrape and ingest the material off of the skin. 

Aloe contains more than seventy-five nutrients that act synergistically and create an awesome force for your health.  Further, its average pH is a “balancing” 4.55.

It is truly a wondrous ‘gold mine’ of phyto-nutrients.

                     Growing Aloe Vera Page

There is an ample source of plant material on the Internet as well as local nurseries.  The most important aspect in shopping for plants is to do business with a reputable nursery that can assure you they are providing you with the BARBADENSIS MILLER variety.  There are hundreds of varieties of Aloe Vera, but the scientific information we have received indicates that it is this variety that contains the most beneficial properties. 

If you use one leaf a day in a blender as we do, you need quite a plantation.  We have in our garden in South Florida about 50 plants growing that includes young pups.  Then you need leaves for the Aloe Plus Mix periodically.  Of course if you are in an area that experiences cold trends that Aloe Vera plants do not like you have to make provisions to protect them.  Our Daughter in Texas covered her Aloe Vera plant during this past winter of 2010 and still lost them. 

Well taken care of plants can live for years and years.  Pups as described toward the end of the booklet are the little guys and gals that shoot up along side of the Mother plant.  Unfortunately there are not many plants that produce pups.  Something to do with the guy and the gal thing.  I have been fortunate to have 2 of my  original 14 plants purchased from a greenhouse in Minnesota produce the pups that I need to keep supplied.    I wouldn't rely on pups initially to establish an adequate plantation though as they could take years to proliferate.  If you have skin concerns the quicker you develop a supply the better.  If you can find a good source of  the Barbadensis Miller Aloe Vera plants get at least 6 to 8 for starters more would even be better.   Search the Internet, you will find a source.  In some cases you can receive them bare root as I did to get started and they grew beautifully,  even though they had few feeder roots.  Staking them was critical.

When you do develop a planting you will have to perpetuate  your plantings with pups.  In the image to your left you will see these little darlings that have popped up next to the Mother plant.  A good sharp knife can be used right along side of the main root to severe them from the Mother plant and to start to increase your little plantation.    So careful severing of the pup may or may not result in feeder roots, but we have found they will grow just the same with a careful planting process.   There isn’t  much that holds them as the butt is relatively short compared to the height of the plant and you are lucky to get a small root strand or 2.  Do not take too many pups at once.  You are breaching the cambium layer of the Mother plant.  One pup every 3 months gives the Mother a chance to heal.   Again don't expect a flood of pups. That one plant pictured above has been my God send as I have a dozen that have never produced a pup in 5 years. 

If you have the room in a garden and you live in a tropical area Aloe plants grow best planted directly in the ground.  If not you will have to use pots,  keep them outdoors for as long as you can and move them inside before cold weather sets in.  Aloe Vera is a succulent and does not like cold conditions let alone  freezing conditions.  Even in Florida during cold spells we take some coastal hay that clings to the plants and protect them. My plantings to the right are shaded for half the day and those stakes are needed to keep them standing as large Aloe plants like to flop over.  I do have a few plants in pots kicking around as they are quite beautiful.

 

Pots

Remember if you live in a climate with frosty weather you should plant your Aloe Vera in pots.  They don't need to be big pots so that you get a hernia bringing them in and out of the house each season,  as they don't have a large root system.  Make sure you have some stones on the bottom of the pot and there is a drainage hole out on to a plate. 

There are 3 basic pots that you can use.  Black plastic nursery pots, decorative plastic/ceramic  and clay. This in an option for you depending on where you place them in your garden or in a nice sun room as far as aesthetics.   When we talk decorative we would recommend clay pots.  Nothing beats clay pots for breathing and more importantly if you have ever wondered what the white powdery effervescence that shows up  at different levels of a clay pot is , in most cases this is salt,  that is a waste by product from soils and fertilizers. 

Filleting the leaves and extracting the gel.

The first thing to do is cut along the sides of the leaf and remove the prickers illustration below left.  They are lethal little buggers.

If the leaf is quite thick the optimum method is to slice the leaf so that there is gel left on both sides of the leaf.  By doing this, you will then be able to remove the clear gel off of both sides of the leaf easily.  In the illustrations to the right it only shows a one side application.  You still filet the clear gel off of both sides in this procedure or apply it direct as illustrated below.  In the Aloe Vera leaf we are told that the most benefits, the all important anti-oxidants are just under skin.  This is similar to all plants.  One example is the cambium layer just under the bark and lifeblood of a tree or any plant for that matter.  There could be an allergic reaction to the material close to the skin and it is known that it can be a cathartic.  Go easy on the amount that you use and discontinue if your urine shows any red/brown coloring.

In the direct applications of Aloe Vera gel to the right note the leaf on my  right on my arm,  face down of course.  I take a knife and score the gel first as well as digging it a little with my nail as I am rubbing the gel on all parts of my body.  Just rub it on and you gals just remember Cleopatra was no dummy.  Her beauty was more than skin deep.

Preparing Aloe Vera

Preparing Aloe leaves for use is somewhat detailed.  There are a few kitchen tools etc.  that you will need to accomplish the filet and extraction scraping  process. 

You will need the following  utensils.

Good sharp paring knife to remove outside skin and  a larger knife to slice the gel off  of the leaves,  followed by scraping the balance off on to the cutting board,  using the same serrated knife on the far right of the illustration.

The Mix

To the right  are some of the ingredients you can add to our AloePlus mix.  Below is a detailed list of these proven skin enhancers. For a batch we use 2-18 0z. bottles of St. Ives.  We use about 12 herbs and anti-oxidants.  We buy over the counter anti-oxidants and either crush the tablets or break the  capsules open or cut the tough ones in half with a knife to get the powder out.  Some tablets have to be crushed with a small pair of pliers and crushed into a powder with a good flat knife on a cutting board.

Note: If you have a high speed blender (We use the Vitamix 3 hp) you can place all of your capsules and caplets in the blender the way they come out of the bottle.  When we get done with the blending process there is absolutely no sign of the capsules, tablets, pills etc.  although we do use a little screening process to make sure debris does not plug up our dispensers.

In this batch we use  2-18 oz.  St. Ives containers of Advanced Body Moisturizer.  St. Ives has nutrients of its own along with Collagen and Elastin known skin enhancers and 2 capsules each  of the anti-oxidants detailed below.  We use the gel from 2 medium sized Aloe leaves.  Caution here.  Make sure that you do not liquefy the mix too much by using the gel from very large leaves. 

Aloe Gel and Anti-Oxidants blended together.

We prepare in advance the anti-oxidants detailed below and the gel and blend the two of them together.   I have not had any confidence in blending the cream, anti-oxidants and gel together in the blender.  We have a heavy duty blender but the thickness of the cream bogs the machine down.  The ladling process described below seems to do a real good job of mixing everything together.

In a separate container we take the gel from the Aloe Vera and again put the anti-oxidants capsules and pills right  in the smoothie container.   We do add a little St. Ives cream and a little distilled water.  Take the mix to the blender and it is very important that you add a couple of ice cubes as heat generated with a high speed blender will virtually denature the enzymes in the Aloe Vera Gel.  I believe the cut off point is 120 degrees and that is not much when you talk about the friction and heat generated by a blender.  USE ICE CUBES IN YOUR MIX WHEN BLENDING.  3 or 4  cubes does the trick.

 

After you squeeze/pour most of the contents out of the new St. Ives containers into a mixing bowl,  (You don't have to get every last drop of the straight cream left in the container as you are going to use the same containers for the finished mix.)  You gently start to ladle in the Aloe Vera/Anti-oxidants that you just finished blending into the St. Ives cream in the mixing bowl.  Stop when you have a nice creamy mix,  not watery. You can add a little corn starch to a mix to tighten it up if necessary.   Folks in the mid west that work in corn processing plants have found that the corn dust is actually a benefit to the skin, so a little corn starch that we eat in gravies etc. should not hurt you by adding it to the mix.  If you use the gel from one aloe leaf for every container of St. Ives it will produce a nice creamy mix.  If it is a little loose don't worry about it.

 

 

The Anti Oxidants

Topical Green Tea.  Green tea has an array of naturally occurring chemicals, polyphenols for one and has shown broad spectrum protection against sun damage, inflammation, DNA damage etc.  It also provides anti-aging benefits and much more.  Yes Green tea extract for topical applications.

Milk Thistle.  A source of Silibinin and Silymarin.  Both of these compounds have exhibited protective effects against skin cancer using topical applications. 

Rosemary.   Contains numerous beneficial compounds, topical applications providing  cancer fighting chemicals, anti-oxidants and anti- inflammatory agents. 

Grape Seed Extract.  Powerful phenolic compounds with topical applications protecting the  skin against sun damage while promoting elasticity, flexibility, youthfulness and health of skin cells. 

Licorice.   Another excellent natural anti-oxidant to compliment the mix.

Pomegranate.  We have recently added Pomegranate with coco polyphenols to the mix out of Life Extensions in Ft Lauderdale.   We ingest this new product daily so we have decided to add it to our skin mix.  These are two very powerful anti-oxidants.  2 capsules for the entire mix is adequate as Pomegranate has a brown coloring and could produce staining on your clothes.  1 capsule of Pomegranate is more than enough or eliminate it.  This also applies to Curcumin.  Curcumin would be a great additive to a skin mix, but if you are a married man be prepared to have your scalp taken by the little lady as it really raises the devil with staining your clothes.  I had to cut it out.

 

C and E Esters.  Incidentally we have been using 3 capsules of the Ester C in the mix as C is one of the best preservatives.  As we mentioned previously placing raw aloe gel into the mix brings up the question of degradation.  We believe with the preservative in the St. Ives as well as the extra kick of the Vitamin C that this should be adequate in keeping the mix in good shape at bathroom temp or where ever you apply it.  I wouldn't  keep it in the sun or a very warm environment.  When we make two new bottles we place them in the refridge as an added precaution.  As mentioned we take the part container that we have been using to place the overage in as the Aloe Gel and nutrients will add and exceed the capacity of the two new containers. 

Alpha Lipoic Acid for its phenomenal anti-oxidant properties.

DMAE which we are told stabilizes cell membranes.  There are many good skin creams that use these specific ingredients in them. 

ACAI  For additional oxidant absorbance

Royal Jelly Bee Propolis  The synergistic combination of an array of Anti-oxidants with Bee Propolis is profound.  Oxidants in the skin are the preclude to skin cancer.  Anti-oxidants with Bee propolis protect the skin and neutralizes oxidants.  I might add that there is nothing better than applying Aloe Plus to the skin, taking in an intelligent amount of sun and working up a good sweat to purge the oxidants that have been neutralized.  This followed by a good hot shower is just what the Doctor ordered.

Take note that all of these ingredients are from natural sources and you do not want anything but natural sources penetrating your skin, as it is picked up by the lymphatic system and passed through the key lymph nodes for processing, before being integrated back into the blood supply and organs.  Remember garbage in is garbage sent to your liver and your kidneys and they don't need any more problems than they get.

We believe all the ingredients we use are safe,  because they have not produced any negative results on our skin, redness, rashes etc.    What you do and what your Doctor advises for your problems and concerns are between you and the Doctor.   If you take a shot and follow our recommendations without your Doctors O.K. you are doing it at your own risk. 

 

Summary below of entire process.

1. Get some newspaper under your work place, this is a sloppy operation, especially if you work fast as I do.

2.  On a cutting board prepare your dry anti-oxidants by mashing the tablets or slicing open the caplets, your herbs etc. (Adding the tablets and pills in their whole form dissolve readily if you have a high powered blender)   Put the mix right in the blender.

3. Take your Aloe leaves,  filet them and place the clumps and gel into the blender as well. 

4.  Place all the  contents  into your blender and blend it well.   Don't forget a couple of ice cubes because if you don't you render the enzymes in your Aloe gel useless.  Don't forget a little St. Ives cream and a some distilled water in the blending mix.

Note: Remember only use enough of the aloe gel mix after blending to make a nice creamy mix. 

5.  Take the cap and plungers  off of  two 18 ounce  bottles of St. Ives cream.    Dump and squeeze as much of each bottle into a  large bowl.  You don't have to get every drop as you will be using the containers to place the finished mix back into them.  

6.  Add the  Aloe Vera  and the powder mix blend to the St. Ives cream that is in the bowl, by ladling it in by hand and stirring well. 

After you have mixed everything take your funnel and place it in the almost empty new containers of St. Ives and start to put it through the funnel into the container with a little vibration.   You could run out of hands and with a top heavy situation this I why enlist my wife to help me.  It also gives me an excuse to have her help me clean up the mess.

7.  Now  starting with 2  full containers and the added Aloe Vera etc. you will have more product than can fit in the new two bottles.  What I do is place the  overage into the older container that I have been working with as I run it right down before I make a batch.     I make sure I get real down on this older bottle so there is room for the overage.   After I use the older bottle first I dispose of the bottle.  When you get down in the bottle to the point that the plunger won't work, just take the cap off and pour out what you need into your hand.  There is quite a bit left on the bottom that can't be brought up with the pump.

I do refrigerate the extra bottles after the process and draw on them one at a time.

The AloePlus do it yourself effort as you have discovered getting this far in the book is quite a chore to take on,  as it is time consuming.  Every  morning when I go through the effort of applying a coating of Aloeplus from the waste up and making sure I get enough on my balding head as the sun hits that area pretty hard,  I think of that plastic surgery episode and the cost, as it was before Uncle sugar started to pick up the tab for me,  at 65.

Below  are two pictures  from an Internet friend  of a very robust Aloe plant/plants in Minnesota.  As you can see she is sharing a very nice sunny spot in this sun room for the plants and I am sure for some rays of her own.  My guess is she spends a great deal of time in this room during the cold months and does not suffer from  sun lacking  deficiencies.  There is a controversy regarding glass blocking UV rays.  Yet plants thrive in a room with sunlight. Try putting them in a closet and see how long they last.   Of course we are not plants, but the suns magic extends well past the Vitamin D theories.  I have 40 plus years of agricultural experiences to back that up.  It might not be a bad idea to take in some rays inside and out and cover all of the bases.  

The image below was sent to me by this very nice lady.   She wanted some information regarding proliferating her Aloe plant below and on the left.  I sent her the instructions I have put forth above and in a short time less than a year she sent me the photo below and the pups she transplanted into 2 other pots.  I am jealous of my student because she out did me on the first try.

To repeat this process, she took the pups  that emerged right next to the mother plant,  using a good sharp knife and getting close under ground and close to the mother plants main stalk.  By staying close to the main stalk you could yield some fibrous roots,  but there wont be many,  as aloe plants do not have a large root base to support the plant, let alone pups.  If they don't have fibrous roots, plant them, they will make roots.  Staking should be used as if you place the lower leaves on the ground they will rot.  Placing the bottom leaves on a rim of the pot could also serve as support if planted carefully.
